SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - There will be a fireworks show this year in Savannah on the Fourth of July.

The Savannah Waterfront Association announced Tuesday that the annual Independence Day Fireworks Show will be held on July 4 at 9:15 p.m.

“There’s always a reason to come down to Savannah’s Waterfront, but we are especially excited about this show as it’s the first event we’ve hosted in over a year,” said Julie Musselman, executive director of the Savannah Waterfront Association. “Fireworks shows are always the highlight of July 4, and we are thrilled to bring this free event to our community.”

While last year’s 4th of July was quiet, this year it will boom throughout the city. Leaders say though it’s back it will look a bit different.

“We’re not quite ready to have public events on the plaza so we’re encouraging all of our spectators to come frequent the restaurants and bars and shops along the waterfront bring your chairs and your blankets.”

Businesses along River Street say they are excited to see the family favorite event return. Though people will be here to celebrate Independence Day, Christmas on the River employees hope they will have some other holiday spirit too. They’ve seen a recent increase in traffic and say events like the fireworks help.

“It actually helps us a lot better because during the week it’s kind of dead so knowing that they’d be doing that it actually helps us out,” said Regina Gorrell, Sale Associate at Christmas on the River.

July 4 is still a month away, but leaders with Savannah’s Waterfront say they’ve been planning this year’s show for a while now and it will be bigger and better than before.

“We’re working with our fireworks provider, Falcon Fireworks to design a really great show. They are excited to be back on the waterfront. We’re going to be shooting the show just west of the convention center so it will be great visibility from the plaza. We’re excited for everyone to bring their chairs, their blankets down,” Musselman said.

While businesses hope to be busy, some say they plan to sneak out for the show set for dusk.

“Oh, I know I’ll go. Like I absolutely love watching the fireworks on the river you can’t go wrong with the view and everything,” said Gorrell.

According to a news release from the Waterfront Association, the City of Savannah will be offering flat rate $5 parking in city garages and the Savannah Convention Center will offer $5 self-parking. Note that parking at the Savannah Convention Center is limited due to construction and the building will not be open.

Spectators on the waterfront are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets; however, coolers are discouraged.
