Energy assistance opportunity for Savannah-Chatham County area residents

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - It’s your chance to get money off of your heating bill.

The Economic Opportunity for Savannah-Chatham County Area is holding their second phase of appointments Wednesday at 7 p.m.

In order to qualify for the money - you must meet the income eligibility so they ask that you bring proof of income along with your heating bill, social security card, and a photo I.D.

The amount you receive will vary.

“The second phase which will be tomorrow evening at 7 o’clock, it will be open to all the people who may qualify in Chatham County for energy assistance they’ll have the same opportunities as the seniors except that the seniors, the people who are 60 years of age and older will still receive the same amount that seniors did that were 65 and older, so everyone 60 years of age and older will receive a minimum of $500. The other people in the community based on their income will receive between $350 and $500,” said Terry Tolbert, Executive Director of Economic Opportunity for Savannah-Chatham County Area Inc.

He says that they are expecting their appointments to be taken up fast. They have 1,800 available which are expected to be taken up in about 30 minutes.

To obtain an appointment, you must call 912.721.7910 Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Potential applicants will receive a date, time of the appointment and confirmation number. There will be no appointments made by calling the EOA office or online, all appointments will be made as described above. Please be advised there is a limited number of appointments.

Once an appointment is made and confirmed, applications will be taken via telephone Monday thru Friday between the hours of 9:00 am-4:00 pm on the day of the appointment.

To qualify, a family’s annual income must be in accordance with the Fiscal Year 2022 LIHEAP Eligibility Guidelines. Documents needed by applicants who qualify are as follows:

1. Current Heating Bill (must provide both electric and gas bill unless the home is total electric).

2. Social Security Card for each member of the household (Medicaid Card or SSN Printout will not be accepted)

3. Picture ID (i.e. Driver’s License, State Photo ID, even if the the ID is expired etc.)

4. Proof of Income for the last 30 days for each adult member of the household.

a. Proof of income can include, but is not limited to: 2021 Social Security Award Letter, a paycheck stub, a letter granting public assistance, unemployment benefits for all applicable members of the household.

These documents should be put in a sealed envelope and placed in the drop box on the Front Entrance of the EOA Cuyler Building located at 618 West Anderson Street. Please ensure that your name, appointment time and date, confirmation number, and a working telephone number is included on the front of the envelope.

All signatures for the applicants will be waived due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic.
